Filmmaker Joan Sekler will speak in Prague during Europe tour with the documentary "Unprecedented"

13.1.2004
PRAHA [American Voices Abroad Prague], tel: 777 621 227

January 19, 2004, 18:00 at the Globe Bookstore at Pstrossova 6

Joan Sekler, the director, producer and writer of a documentary film about the controversial US presidential elections in 2000, will be speaking in Prague at the American Voices Abroad “Democracy Extravaganza” January 19th at the Globe bookstore. The award-winning documentary “Unprecedented” will be screened at 18:00, followed by a question and answer session with Ms. Sekler.

Heralded as a “tour de force” by newspapers across the United States, “Unprecedented” is the riveting story of the battle for the Presidency and the undermining of democracy in America, revealing suspicious irregularities, intimidation at the polls and sinister voter purges in a state governed by the winning candidate’s brother. The filmmakers document gross manipulation of voter rolls, the ballot count and the media, and what emerges is a disturbing picture of a stolen election. The Associated Press writes, “This film, I think, will make us very angry.”

"It is important for all Americans to understand how George W. Bush was not the winner of the Presidential election in 2000,” Sekler says, emphasizing that her tour of Europe is aimed at mobilizing American voters abroad. “The participation of Americans abroad in the Presidential election of 2004 will be crucial in the effort to 'take back democracy' in the U.S."

“Unprecedented” has met with striking fame and popularity, especially considering its politically sensitive content, receiving the Grand Prize for Best Documentary and the Director’s Award at the New York International Film Festival, the Grand Festival Award at the Berkeley Film and Video Festival and many more. See www.unprecedented.org for further information.

Ms. Sekler is a founder of the Los Angeles Independent Media Center, a worldwide network of independent journalists and videographers who produce media on political and social issues. She has been an associate producer and/or publicist for numerous political documentaries including the Academy Award winning film “The Panama Deception” and “Yellow Wasps: Anatomy of a War Crime,” about the war in Bosnia.

The Prague screening takes place as part of AVA’s "Democracy Extravaganza," the launch of the “100,000 for 2004” Worldwide Voter Pledge Drive for Americans Living Abroad being held Monday, Jan. 19th at the Globe Bookstore from 16:00 to midnight. The film will also be shown in Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK this month. See http://prajections.tripod.com/avap.htm for more information.
