Members of the International Peace Movement attacked by two Czech-speaking men

28.7.2003
PRAHA [International Peace Movement]
Autor: Thomas Britz, tel: 602478468

On Sunday, July 27, 2003 two Czech-speaking men physically and verbally attacked members of the International Peace Movement of the Czech Republic (IPMCR) on Jungmannovo naměstí in Prague 1.

Three people gathered on the square at 20:00 for a weekly candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of war. They lit candles and displayed
informational papers. Two unknown Czech-speaking men approached the group at about 20:45, expressed disagreement with the vigil and kicked the candle display apart with their feet. The IPMCR group set up the display again. One of the men then slapped one of the vigillers, an American woman, on the chest and face. At this point, the vigillers asked the two men to leave the area and called the police at 158. When the attackers were told that the police were being called, they quickly left.

The police representative contacted by mobile phone said there was nothing he could do if the attackers had already left the area and no police arrived on the scene. Within 10 minutes one of the attackers returned, shouting curses at the IPMCR group, who were preparing to leave the square. He lifted a municipal garbage can and threw it at the group. One of the vigillers, an Egyptian man, was cut by the flying metal can. The attacker threatened to return in the future with others. The IPMCR group then quickly left the area. The injuries were treated by bystanders who had a first aid kit in their car.

IPMCR will continue with vigils at Jungmannovo nam. every Sunday at 20:00. IPMCR will request security monitoring by the League of Human Rights and will inform the police of the time and location of vigils.
