Very often, environmental issues are only known to a few hundred local residents. Through www.ecomap.org, any person or organization can list a problem and seek like-minded people throughout Ukraine to solve it. The site also allows you to join other people’s causes or vote for problems you consider urgent. The platform aims to unite the efforts of NGOs, companies and independent activists to improve the environment by sharing their knowledge and experience.
"Every day we see trash in parks and sometimes illegal logging, development in protected areas and other environmental problems. Each of us can make a difference, but only if we unite our efforts. The more people and organizations connect, the more chances we have of success," said Olexandra Kovbasko, author of the environmental map idea at WWF Ukraine.
The initial version of the map was written by three people for 48 hours within the charity hackathon Hack4Good. Once the map was developed and updated, a team of young programmers at SoftServe IT Academy completed it under the direction of Igor Tsvetkov.
“I am very happy that we were lucky to learn through a real project. It was a very rewarding experience,” said Igor Tsvetkov, a teacher at SoftServe IT Academy. “We were developing the project from mid-August to late October. I am proud of every student who was involved in this necessary project."
"Working on the map has given me an invaluable experience in developing web applications. I went through the full cycle of building software. The first thing I quickly realized was that good communication in the team is very important to quickly get out of "deadlocks," said Andrew Ward, a student at SoftServe IT Academy.
WWF Ukraine thanks all activists for their help in the realization of this useful project!
