Hospodářské zisky nebo ochrana pokladů maďarské přírody?

25.11.2014
GLAND [WWF]

The biggest Hungarian nature conservation organisations have joined hands in civil action against a recent government decision to transfer the trusteeship of more than 20% of Hungary’s protected nature conservation areas to the National Agriculture and Land Management Service (NFA).

The recent decision affects more than 50 thousand hectares of preserved natural habitat. The Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society, Friends of the Earth Hungary and WWF Hungary believe that this move is against the long term interests of both Hungarian economy and nature and calls into question the future of Hungarian Nature Preservation.

Nature conservation areas were so far managed by the Hungarian National Park Directorates with the core goal of providing a level of nature conservation in line with the legislation of the Hungarian Constitutional Court.

Conservation experts are now concerned there is no guarantee that NFA will be able to deliver the same level of proficiency when it comes to taking care of these lands. NFA experts do not have the professional background needed for this kind of work.

The professional, economic and political arguments for transferring the lands’ management to NFA are unclear. Even more concerning is the fact that the decision will lead to a further reduction of the budget of National Park Directorates, which calls into question the efficiency and survival of the entire Hungarian official nature preservation system.

Because protected areas should not by any means be used for agriculture, Hungarian conservation experts demand that the government withdraw this decision. Preserving natural treasures should always come before any short-term economic gains. Respecting this principle will ensure both the long term social and economic good of the country.
