Candlelight vigils will continue until the war ends

28.3.2003 - PRAHA (International Peace Movement ) - The International Peace Movement of the Czech Republic announces that it will hold a candlelight vigil against the war in Iraq every evening at 19:00 on Old Town Square until the war in Iraq ends. Our members have gathered on the square for the past week, every day since Friday, March 21, to quietly protest the killing of innocent people and to call for peace. We are confident that, with the help of the residents of Prague, we can continue with our vigil every night until the war is brought to an end.

Each evening we construct a beautiful circle of candles around the statue of Jan Hus. Some people hold pictures of the ordinary people of Iraq who are endangered or injured by the war. “Traditional demonstrations are not the only method by which we can express our needs and opinions,” says Ahmad Ghlim, an Iraqi citizen living in the CR. “These candles are both a symbol of our hope for peace and a symbol of our solidarity with the people in Iraq who are now in grave danger.”

IPMCR is made up of both dozens of Czechs and international residents of Prague from 15 countries. We call upon all who are troubled by this war to join us on Old Town Square to give a quiet, non-political message of peace. “It is important that demonstrations for peace be peaceful,” says Gwendolyn Albert, an IPMCR coordinator. “We must meet violence and destruction creatively.”
