World Classical Disciplines Ski Championship in 2003 a 2005

Declaration on protection of endangered ecosystems of the Jizera Mountains Preserves

Our environment movements are very upset with the present project for the Jizera Mountains Preserves (CHKO Jizerské hory) prepared by the Association SKI 2003 for organizing the World Championship in classic ski disciplines. We believe that this project might damage the already very weak ecological balance in these mountains. We think, that a landscape protected area is not the right place for organizing large sport events like the World Ski Championships.

We are very aware of possible threats to the Jizera Mountains Preserves, due to a large number of changes in the landscape because of the planned enlarging of roads and parking places. Especially since the spruce forests are already weakend by air pollution and sensitive peatbogs in the mountains will be damaged by the World Championship and its visitors.

The Jizera Mountains Preserves have a very important role for the Euroregion Nisa as an area collecting water resources for the whole region. For that reason possible negative influence of the World Championship on the environment is not only the matter of the Czech Republic, but also of Poland and Germany. These two countries would be influenced by higher traffic as well.

We demand politicians and concerned decision makers consider the possible deterioration of the environment by World Ski Championship in 2003 in the Jizera Mountains Preserves and view the situation as very serious. Likewise we demand the international EIA process to be undertaken for these plans.
