About the Good Neighbor Project

The Good Neighbor Project for Sustainable Industries provides technical, legal and strategic support to concerned plant neighbors and workers to promote pollution prevention at local industries and to prevent chemical accidents.

We support hands-on efforts by community organizations and workers to create engagement processes and agreements leading to sustainable industrial facilities.

We emphasize the need for rights and resources for effective participation by the people most affected by industrial hazards, and accountability of corporations for environmental and economic impacts.
 

• Conduct Stakeholder Evaluations -- Our stakeholder evaluation process provides guidelines for an industry and community process of ensuring that a local industry is doing the very best that it can do on safety, health and environment.
• Identify Hidden Efficiencies and Win-Win Opportunities -- Creative solutions surface when new attention, interest and expertise is applied to seemingly intractable technical problems. Pollution prevention and chemical accident prevention issues can be transformed from challenges to opportunities.
• Design Inclusive Health, Environment And Safety Programs -- Environmental health concerns are often a basis of community anxiety and outrage. A transparent, technically informed process can help to meet stakeholders' actual needs for safety and health protection while improving the quality of information and communications for all participants.
• Create Environmental Justice -- Creating fairness between industry and community, especially in low income neighborhoods and communities of color.
• Reinvent Government -- Involving local stakeholders as a supplement to conventional regulatory approaches.
• Forge Collaborative Working Relationships -- Partnerships are created around joint activities including facility evaluation, community education, technical problem solving and stakeholder communications.

• Workshops and Training: We can provide a speaker for your meeting, or conduct a specialized session suited to your needs. Workshops range from one hour to two days.
• Legal Advisor: Specialized, expert legal advice through the Good Neighbor Project can be provided to assure legally viable arrangements on such issues as enforceability, compatibility with federal and state regulatory requirements and protection of proprietary information.

The Network Against Corporate Secrecy is a grassroots network of environmental organizations, consumer groups and labor unions opposed to corporate secrecy and seeking an expansion of the public's Rights to Know. It is chaired by Sanford Lewis, Director of the Good Neighbor Project.
